چکیده

The calculated behavior of Gb/s on-off modulated scaled microlasers exhibit a non-monotonic dependence of timing jitter on spontaneous emission factor, β. Microlasers with 10-2 < β < 10-1 give optimal performance for Gb/s on-off modulated applications requiring less than 20 ps jitter and greater than 20 dB optical power contrast ratio.

The advantage of using a diode laser instead of a Q-switched laser in photoacoustic imaging of tissues

Photoacoustic (PA) imaging of biological tissues using laser diodes instead of conventional Q switched pulsed systems provides an attractive alternative for biomedical applications. However, the relatively low energy of laser diodes operating in the pulsed regime, results in generation of very weak acoustic waves, and low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the detected signals. This problem can be ...

Influence of Gain Suppression on Static and Dynamic Characteristics of Laser Diodes under Digital Modulation

This paper presents theoretical investigation of the influence of gain suppression on dynamic characteristics of InGaAsP laser diodes under digital modulation. The study is based on numerical solution of the laser rate equations in which the bias current is augmented by a digital signal with norreturn to zero coding. The modulation characteristics include the eye diagram, turn-on jitter and qua...

Implementation of intensity-modulated laser diodes in time-resolved, pump-probe fluorescence microscopy.

We present the implementation of intensity-modulated laser diodes for applications in frequency-domain pump-probe fluorescence microscopy. Our technique, which is based on the stimulated-emission approach, uses two sinusoidally modulated laser diodes. One laser (635 nm) excites the chromophores under study, and the other laser (680 nm) is responsible for inducing stimulated emission from excite...

Dynamics of optical backward-injection-induced gain-depletion modulation and mode locking in semiconductor optical amplifier fiber lasers.

The optical gain-depletion-induced mode-locking dynamics of a semiconductor optical-amplifier-based fiber ring laser (SOAFL) backward injected by a purely sinusoidally modulated or digitally encoded distributedfeedback laser diode are theoretically and experimentally demonstrated. The effect of gain depletion and waveform on the mode-locked pulse width, pulse shape, and power of the SOAFL are i...

Wavelength switching using multicavity semiconductor laser diodes

We demonstrate wavelength switching in a novel multicavity distributed Bragg reflector semiconductor laser diode. This new device, which uses an integrated saturable absorber and singlemode fiber Bragg gratings, digitally switches wavelength as a function of drive current between all possible binary combinations.
